Before the Ascension Parish school district upgraded its network to 1 Mbps per student, teachers relied heavily on traditional textbooks and a one-size-fits-all approach. The upgrade allowed the district to implement innovative digital learning programs like STEM curriculum in middle schools, blended learning programs for off-campus students, and phenomenon-based learning. Students use virtual labs to explore and conduct experiments while working towards a culminating project. For example, 8th-grade students learn how to use data to build robots that are conducive to different environments using a 3D printer. Students in other grades create carnival games, design products, and develop marketing plans.
Ascension Parish is now one of the top-rated school districts in the state. Test scores have improved, and students have become better collaborators and more motivated to solve problems they’re genuinely interested in.
